E-Portfolio

My name is Andrew Savereno and I am currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the Pennsylvania State University. I am in the Liberal Arts College and am pursuing a degree in history as I am aiming to attend law school.  Over the summer I took the standard English 15 course that is required to be taken by all students. I took the Rhetoric and Civic Life course as an added benefit to myself considering my desired career path and life in general.  I feel that this course has immensely benefitted me as I have acquired a much deeper understanding of both rhetoric and civic life that the standard class does not fulfill. I have come to understand that rhetoric is not something that is used by politicians and public speakers, but should be used by people in everyday life. It is very important in order to effectively engage in meaningful and fulfilling interactions with others. In today’s world, I feel that this has been lost as many people try to just outdo others in conversations and debates. The purpose of rhetoric and civic life is to not only further oneself but also ones community.  When one engages in these acts, he must be open to change his views and hope to do the same to others. It is not about winning an argument, but to have a reasonable and civil discussion. I feel that this is extremely important in my desired career in that it is essential to be capable of not only opening my mind to others opinions and recognizing how to benefit others as a whole. I have learned the importance of the aforementioned topics and how to use them to my advantage. The course has taught me to effectively use public speaking and writing to wide audiences that I did not have a full grasp on.  I feel that now I have many more tools at my disposal and am in general much am a much more capable person.
